Kidder Kid Conversations

Lucy, after dropping a breadstick on the floor and retrieving it, "Haha, sorry Baxter. Maybe another day you can have one of these!" 

As I was listening to the song "Oh Church Arise" Lucy came in and asked, "Why do we need to change out our eyes?"

Lucy: "See my wand? I can do magic spelling!"

B: "Why did we choose to have a cross shape in with our Christmas cookies?"

L: "Jesus died in the cross"

B: "Why did he die?"

L: "To take away our sins"

B: "What are our sins?"

L: "Disobedience."

B: "What else is a sin?"

L: "Consequences."

B: "Well, consequences are things we deserve after we sin. What are some other ways we sin? 

L: "Hitting our brother." 

Overheard Lucy singing, "I stand alone on the word of God E.I.E.I.O BIBLE!!!" 

I stopped reading the story of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and asked Lucy how she thought God was going to save them - pharaoh and his army behind and a huge sea in front of them - she answered, "God won't let them die!" I asked "What is he going to do to keep them safe?" "God will send boats so they can cross the sea!" :) 

The kids were playing doctor and Lucy was administering a shot:

L: Close your eyes for me. Think of something happy. What are you thinking of? Are you thinking of Grammy? 

M: Yeah

Trying to convince Michael to finish his dinner,

B: "Can you take a football bite Michael?"

M: "Yeah....[takes bite] TU DUN!!!!!!" (Touchdown!) 

Lucy’s song: "I would like a home eventually, I would like a home eventually.... inside a deep blue sea.... With some blue birds, and another blue and some purple toys. And some pink elephants, to be a buddy for your children. For your girl, your big girl's buddy." 

Lucy, excitedly running by me: "I have to go get my baby a hat because daddy showed me something crazy! He threw the water in the air and it turned into snow! It was magic!"

Lucy wanted to give Gordon a piece of candy, and was told he is too little. 

L: "Can we save it for him for when he's bigger?"

B: "No sweetie, it will spoil and go bad."

L: "Well how about this? We put it in the refrigerator!" 

I was brushing my hair in the bathroom, looking in the mirror and Lucy says, on her way out the door, "On your busiest day, you see the gray.” (She must have overheard the hair commercial… but her timing was hilarious!) 

Asking a question about her new cereal, Lucy: "Mommy, is that man on the box named Lucky Charles?"

Lu, when looking at the 10 day forcast with Brad and discussing the weather for the day, "Can you show me where summer is?” (Winter was long for us…) 

Michael's rendition of Twinkle Twinkle: "Tickle tickle tar, uh ta ta ta da da da, up da da da da da high," 

Lucy: "Mommy, when I'm older how will I get kids from Jesus?” 

M: knock knock

Anyone: who’s there?

M: Mickey Mouse

Anyone: Mickey Mouse who?

M: EAT BUGS!! 

L: Mommy can you pray that God will give me 4 children?

L: What that?

B: It's an iPass

L: What's - an iPass?

B: It pays so you can drive on roads that cost money. 

L: Is that like an iPad?

B: No, but they start with the same few letters. 

B: You don't always have to tell everyone what to do ok? 

L: Ok...

B: I know how that feels. 

L: It feels happy. 

B: For you...

Michael, talking on his hand-phone: "Hi babe, hi Brad.... Yeah"

Lucy: "Michael did you know that when you spit, your mouth toots?"

(Bringing me a Playmobil book)

Michael: "How open this?"

Sarah: "That's not one that opens buddy."

Michael: "Need screw driver open it?" 

Sarah: "Buddy, it doesn't open."

Michael: "Hammer open it?" 

L: "Tomorrow will be another head."

S: "What"

L: "Tomorrow will be another head!"

S: "I don't understand what you are saying Lu."

L: "I'm saying, like, tomorrow is a head." 

S: "Oh!! Ahead!"

S: Those are Cranes!

M: Crayons?

S: No cranes. 

M: Oh, markers?

S: No, Cranes!

M: Oh! Birds?

S: Yes. Birds. 

B: "Lucy, I'll help you with your phone later." 

L (exasperated): "I'm 4 years old, I should be able to figure it out!"

(While playing restaurant) 

Lu: what do you want to eat sir?

M: hamster

Lu: that comes with fish

M: yuck 

Lu: mommy! How do you spell hamster with fish?

B: Michael, when did you get so big?

M: 15 minutes! 

Kidder Kid Conversations

All loaded up in our van ready to pull out of our Pampa driveway,
Lucy: "To Michigan Please! Wait!!! You almost forgot to buckle me in!!" (We remedied that problem ASAP!)

Lucy: "Mommy, when I grow up I want to be a poodle... Actually a bumblebee."

Lucy: "Daddy, what's that?"
Brad: "The sun silly!"
Lucy: "But it doesn't have those spikey thingies."

Brad has more patience than I when it comes to "why" questions and thinks it's funny to see the extremes he can direct the conversation to...
L: "Daddy, do bees like honey?"
B: "Yes Lu, bees love honey."
L: "Why do bees love honey?"
B: "Because it is their food and they need to store it up until winter."
L: "Why do they need to store it up?
B: "Because in the wintertime flowers don't grow."
L: "Why winter?"
B: "Because the earth is on a tilt that makes it different temperatures around the world at different times of the year."
(Silence...... 5ish minutes later)
L: "Daddy, do bees like honey."
B: "Yes sweetheart, do you remember we just talked about that."
L: "Yes, can we talk about it again?"
B: "Ok - yes, bees love honey."
L: "And what else daddy?"

L to M: "I don't want to be your friend right now I'm in time out"

Lu, after listening to the GPS/Siri direct us around town a lot lately, "Daddy, your defination is on the left."

Our country girl, Lucy, pointing to a man waiting in a bus stop alcove, "Why does that man live there?" 

During a Daddy Date:
Brad: "What should we do next kids?"
Lucy: "Lets go to Fazoli's!"
Brad: "No, silly, we just had breakfast."
Lucy: "Ok, Starbucks then."
Brad: "Starbucks? What?!?!"
Lucy: "Yes, Starbucks or Fazoli's - those are the options."

Lucy: "I'm really really phonerd" Brad: "What's that mean?"
Lucy: "It means I really want my phone"

Getting into the car, Lucy: "We are going to the Mall Miss Siri."

Lucy in the car after a direction from Siri: "We got it miss Siri!"

Lucy wandering around Ikea: "Wowie wow wowsome!"

Lucy: "Yod-e-lady yeee hooo! I yodel really well. Sometimes I do it really loud."

Lucy, after hearing Brad and I discuss our lunch options: "These are the options, Pizza.... Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! There are lots of different kinds of Pizza... Bogden Pizza and Cheese Pizza!" (Bogden is a friend who lives in Cleveland but who recently stopped by for a visit on his way to Chicago)

Lucy, whispering her own prayer at a big family function during the family prayer before we ate, "Thank you for this food. Please keep the dinosaurs out of our house."

And an update on Michael boy's language development (we are having more conversations with him too)!! :) Michael said, "Yes" last week! Hurray! He calls me (Sarah) "Baba" and Brad "Dada" - "Da" is still his go-to response for most everything but we are beginning to hear the beginning of "This" which comes out as "Dis" as Michael works hard to vocalize his needs. He signs, "Please,"  "Thank you," "More," "Help," and "All done." And we are working with him to put those signs and his words into full sentences by having him repeat (word for word) after us, ex: "Yes please Baba" or "More please dada." He gets a HUGE smile on his face when he knows he's communicated an idea and we've understood what he wants. We are continuing to pray that Michael would learn a few more words before his little brother comes, but are super encouraged by his growth in the past month! He can also identify tons of animals, some shapes and different types of transportation. He's great at I Spy and can identify the majority of his body parts. So at 20 1/2 months, we are pleased with his progress and are trying to understand that he's 1) a boy and 2) has a VERY verbal sister and we can't expect him to be at the same level she was at at his age. :) Hopefully before long he'll be cracking us up with his humor too - I can't wait to share! :)

Kidder Kid Conversations

We are in the midst of moving boxes around here - the walls are bare of art-work and the windows of curtains. I've worked non-stop for the past 8 hours and am now sitting for a breather before getting dinner started. I'm so thankful for my in-law's help! It's amazing what the hands of 4 adults can accomplish in a day compared to 2! Lucy had us laughing at breakfast this morning and as I added her conversation to the list I keep on my phone, I realized I had a long list going and that I should post them on here before Michael deletes my note! (Yes, that did happen two weeks ago, I may or may not have cried. Thankfully I was able to recall the majority of the conversations below because I had just read through them a few days earlier.) :) 

Lucy was playing at the park and really wanted to interact with some boys who were 8-10 years old. They kept telling her she wasn't tough enough or strong enough to play with them and then running away from her,
Lucy: "Hey guys, I'm just Lucy Jo. You don't need to be scared. I AM tough!"
After chasing and chasing and not being able to catch them, Lucy comes over to me,
Lucy (out if breath): "Mommy, I can't catch them."
Sarah: "I know sweetie, they are bigger than you and can run faster - but that's ok. You'll be big like them someday too!"
Lucy: "Okay, I'll just give them these rocks and tell them I forgive them."

Lucy: "Daddy when I grow up can I be a bird so I can fly?"

(Back story, Lucy calls passing gas, "tweeting")
Lucy: "I tweeted all over Facebook!"

While listening to music in the car as a family, daddy started to sing along,
Lucy: "Daddy! Stop singing, let the song sing all by itself."

Brad: "Ask mommy if it's time to go scoop ice cream yet!"
Lucy: "Mommy.... Ice cream?" (She had a bit of a brain cramp because she was so excited and left out a bunch of words."
Sarah: "Tell Daddy that strong men have to scoop ice cream."
Brad: "Oh! Baloney!"
Lucy: "No daddy! Not Baloney! Ice Cream!!!"

Lucy: "I wish I knew how to play ping-pong-pong."

When Lucy asks to stay up late she phrases it this way, "Can I please stay way up early?"

After an interaction with Brad in which he tells Lu that she needs to eat faster because it's past her bedtime and she needs to go to sleep, but he will have grace with her and still allow her to have her dessert. Lu exclaimed, very worried: "No daddy! Not grace! Sour patch kids!!"

This one is learned/taught but so fun all the same. Brad has taught Lucy to use this exclamation when something is too "spicy" (a term we'd rather her not use mostly because we've heard it spoken by many kids as a complaint). After a deep breath and a drink of water, Lu is to exclaim, "Oo! That was zesty!" And she does! It's amazingly adorable.

Lucy, waiting for daddy to pay for our ice cream treat, "It's so hard [to wait] I can't breathe!"

On the way home from Amarillo after picking up Grandma and Grandpa, Grandpa decided to snooze in the car, 
Lucy:"Cock-a-doodle-doo! Grandpa wake up!"

Brad and his Dad having a conversation at breakfast about stoping for breaks on the roadtrip to Michigan, 
Brad: "Stops turn into hours added onto the trip!"
Lucy: "And hours are tiring!" 

Kidder Kid Conversations

First off, let me say how much I love these kiddos....

They brighten my days and make life fun with their little personalities and silly spirits. Here are some of the fun conversations we've had lately: 

Lucy: "Michael are you dirty again?!" 
Sarah: "Yep, he is - Lucy do you want to change him?"
Lucy: hahaha "No! That's your job!" 

Playing Doctor with Lucy

Lu: "Well, you don't have a fever - which is good. Is anything else bothering you? .... Take a big breath for me?... Breathe out..... Breathe out.... Breathe out...." 

Sarah: "That sounds like a great plan Lu, let's write it down." 
Lucy: "Let's write it UP!!" 

We ran out of pull-ups and decided to have Lucy wear diapers during naps and at bedtime. Brad put her up in the changing table (in Michael's room) to put a diaper on her one evening before bed and she said, very seriously: "If Michael comes in here he will be confused." 

Lucy to Brad: "Your name's Ben my name's Anna - together, we are Banana!"

(We later asked her where she came up with that and she said, "Doc McStuffins!" I don't know if it's true, I haven't heard it - but it made us laugh! :) ) 

Kidder Kid Conversations

Ok, so I am 3 or 4 months behind in my blogging... there is a lot to catch you guys up on! Michael had a birthday, Christmas happened and we have some big "Our family is in transition" news! Just because I haven't been blogging doesn't mean that our kids, namely Lucy, haven't been funny. My note on my phone is overflowing with funny things she's said - so let's get this catch-up ball rolling with some funnies! 

Around Christmas, bringing a book to Brad,
Lucy: "Can we read this book about Santa-No-Closet?"

Lucy, "talking" on the phone with Tinkerbelle: "Are you eating with Peter Pan?"

Lucy: But I don't have any money!
Sarah: (Breaking into song) It's not about the money money money...
Lucy: Thanks for reminding me 

Lucy: Good night! Sleep tight! Don't let the baby piglets bite! 

(She still says this, we find it too cute to correct her)

Lucy: "Mommy! I always wake up the farm, since I was a little chicken. I say Cock-a-doodle-do!!!"

Lucy: "Look at those rhinos!"
Sarah: "I don't see any rhinos silly."
Brad: "oh Lu, those are cows! But if you ever do see a rhino - please let us know!"
Lucy: "They are not cows... They are rhinos."

S: Well, what do you want for presents for your birthday?
L:Maybe a record collection?
S: A record collection?
L: "Yeah, that's when I turn on the music and shake my belly and dance! Can we get that from the store?"

While eating dinner, during a lull in the conversation,
L: "Daddy is so gorgeous, he is so gorgeous."
S: "haha! yes he is Lu, yes he is" 

Lucy: (As I'm crawling in bed with her to wake her up from a long nap) "Mommy? I spy you with my eye" 

L: "Let's pray for Ellie!"
B: "Jesus, thank you for Ellie and the  happiness and comfort she brings Lucy."
L: "She doesn't bring me! I bring her!"

Upon seeing a little boy, at Walmart, in PJ's that look a little too familiar:
L: "No! Those are Michael's pajamas!" 

After a horrible mouse encounter (thankfully Brad was home) during which I screamed and was sent to my bedroom.
Lucy: Mommy are you scared of mice?
Sarah: Yes Lucy I am.
Lucy: I'm scared of hand driers. 

(I felt very understood and loved by this statement. Because she does. not. like. hand driers!)

Lucy stuck a play candle into the cushions of the couch and exclaimed: "Happy Birthday to the Couch!!"

While playing with finger puppets:
Sarah (as a chicken): "Cluck cluck, how are you today Mr Octopus?"
Lucy (as a octopus): "I need to get back to the sea" 

Sarah: "Hey there little Miss!"
Lucy: "I'm not a little mess, I'm a BIG mess!!" 

Lucy, after passing gas: "Oops, I just tweeted."

After receiving her milk from the McDonald's drive through,
Lucy: "It's got a clown on it!"
Sarah: "A clown? Oh! That's Ronald McDonald! He's the McDonald's clown."
Lucy: "Wonald McDonawld?" Hehe "That's a funny name!" 

Kidder Kid Conversations

This is the first in a new series that we will be doing here on the blog, featuring funny* things our kids say. I got this idea from my cousin Kim and her family and thought it was a great idea to keep track of what the kids say and record them for others to enjoy.

*Funny, defined by what makes us laugh. We hope it does the same for you. :) 

So without further ado, here are some funny Kidder Kid Conversations: 

Sarah: "Lu, how many ears does Grandpa have? Can you count them?"
Lucy: "One... Other one!"

Lucy: "I need help putting on my shoe"
Sarah: "Do you want to be Cindarella and see if your shoe fits?" (We tried her shoe on and it fit perfectly, I told her she could be a princess and marry the prince!)
Lucy: "I need a dress!" (Said in a very matter-of-fact way)

Grandpa: "Michael you're a genius!" 
Lucy: "I want to be a genie!"

(Getting out of the car at a hotel on one of our road-trips)
Lucy: "Yeah! Hey it's my birthday!"
Brad: "No it isn't your birthday."
Lucy:  "It sure is my birthday."

Aunt Amy: "Lucy please apologize to Michael for kicking him."
Lucy: "Michael I'm sorry you were in my way."

I had told Lucy that she was a distraction to Michael while I was nursing him and she needed to go into the living room to play. A few minutes later she peaks her head around the corner and says "I am a distraction!"

Lucy, looking at the moon: "The moon is full of candy! Silly moon."

Sarah: "Well aren't you little miss picky!"
Lucy: "I'm not miss Piggy, I'm Lucy and I'm 2 years old."

Brad: (responding to Lucy's sassy attitude) "I was correcting your grammar Lu"
Lucy: "I want a graham cracker right now."

Lucy: "Oranges are tasty and orangey and juicy!"

Brad: "Sar, where did you get that a.p.p.l.e j.u.i.c.e?"
Lucy: "Pee pee? Ellie? She sits on her toilet."

Lucy: "Amy texted me"
Brad: "Oh really?"
Lucy:"Ya, and I text her to bring me some kiss-pex" (crispex) 

(Lucy came over to the sewing machine while I was working on a project)
Sarah: "Lucy, please do not touch the buttons on Mommy's sewing machine - this is not a toy for you and you are not to touch it okay?"
Lucy: "Yeah, and I'll get one when I get married?"

Our little "Chef-Man"

This post is about two of our daughter's birthday gifts, a Chef Hat and Kitchen. :)

S: Who are you? 

L: I'm a Chef-Man. 

S: You're not a Chef-Woman or a Chef-Girl? 

L: No, I'm a Chef-Man

 The Chef Hat was one of her momma-made gifts. It didn't cost me any money, the green polka-dot is left over from the back of her baby quilt and the blue is remnants from the binding on Michael's quilt! :) I love projects that I can make with what I have - especially when they are so stinking cute! I still can't believe how well the fabrics match her apron! (Lucy got her apron as a baby gift from our good friend in Chicago, Jenny - it's from Anthropology!)

The kitchen has already filled many hours with creative, imaginative play.

Birthday cakes are a specialty of our "Chef-man"

She uses her scrub brush to wash her dishes and makes "beeping" sounds for the microwave.

S: Lucy, what's your favorite thing to do in your kitchen?

L: Cook. I like to cook donuts.

S: What are you doing in this picture?

L: Toast is in the toaster. 

(It is.... the green thing on the hearth is a toaster. :) )

S: What about this picture? What are you doing here?

L: I'm playing with my silverware.

S: What kinds of silverware do you have?

L: Kinds of silverware. 

Her kitchen is well stocked, thanks to the generosity of grandparents and friends. 

I had to include this picture - mostly because of her hair! I was pretty proud of her side braid that day. It is rare when she holds still long enough for me to do her hair. I can't remember specifically, but if I had to bet - a TV show helped her sit still this day. :)

I have no idea how I captured this picture but I love it - the blurred action around Lu and the fact she is in focus. 

How her table looks most days - all the guests attending her parties get silverware, a treat and a drink  (in a mug/tea cup or a bottle). :)

Looking for a candle for the cake. It is not uncommon for me to hear, "I need help finding a candle for my cake!" :)

There - she found it! Throwing a well thought out party takes concentration! :) 

Inconsistent

I had an interesting conversation with Lucy last Saturday.

L: (putting her spoon in her big girl water glass) "My spoon go here?"
S: No Lu, your spoon doesn't go in your cup - you can put it in your bowl or on the table.
L: Oh

A few minutes later

L: (Looking at me out of the corner of her eye, puts her spoon in her cup)
S: Lu, I just asked you to not put your spoon in your cup - if you do it again, I am going to put your water in a sippy cup.
L: But mamma put her spoon in her cup? (Said in her sweet, voice-dripping-with-honey-voice - yes, she is 2 and already has this voice down pat.)
S Thinking: Touché daughter - great I have double standards....
S: OH!!! Lucy you're right, Mamma does stir her coffee with a spoon don't I.

Honestly I don't remember what I said next, but I knew in that moment that this wouldn't be the first time Lucy pointed out an inconsistency in my parenting.

Things have been quiet around this here blog for about three months now. This has not been intentionally, it has just happened. Life has been a bit busy, Grandma Buning (Brad's mom's mom) lets me know that she misses updates on the blog, but understands I've got more on my plate with two little ones now. I miss updating the blog too! And I really hope to be better at this whole blogging thing - but honestly... I will probably continue to "blog binge" as Brad calls it - posting a TON in a short period of time. :)

I've been asked by a few people why I don't just post fun things as they happen and then go back and post things from the past. It's a good question and my response is always this: I hope to someday have my blog published into a book for our family - I see it as a sort of modern-scrappbook - and I really want to have everything in chronological order for that reason. :)

I got a fun (very early) birthday present though, that is hopefully going to help me be a bit more consistent with this hobby of mine.

My computer is full of unpublished pictures and I've been keeping pretty good notes to recount our memories from the past few months. So get ready friends, we are going to take a trip back to July over the next few days and work our way toward the present. :)
